HMP Birmingham

We completed a week-long installation of specialist netting at HMP Birmingham, also known as Winson Green Prison. This project was part of an ongoing effort to tackle a significant security challenge facing the facility. Over recent months, HMP Birmingham has seen an increase in the smuggling of drugs into prison yards. These substances have been delivered in multiple ways, including drones and thrown packages, creating safety concerns for both staff and inmates. The problem has been widely reported in the news and highlights the need for robust, practical security measures.

Our team was brought in to provide an effective solution. By installing high-quality netting across key areas of the prison perimeter, we created a strong physical barrier designed to prevent contraband from entering the facility. This measure not only addresses the immediate threat of drone deliveries but also contributes to a wider strategy of maintaining safety and supporting rehabilitation programs.

The Growing Challenge of Drones and Contraband

The use of drones to deliver illicit substances into prisons is a challenge that has increased globally. Drones can carry small packages over high walls and other security features, making it easier for contraband to reach inmates without direct contact with the outside world. In addition to drones, items are sometimes thrown over fences or passed during other breaches in perimeter security.

These methods pose multiple risks. Drugs and other contraband can lead to violence among inmates, create health risks, and place additional pressure on prison staff. They also compromise rehabilitation efforts by enabling access to substances that can impede progress. Effective prevention measures are therefore essential to maintaining the integrity of the facility.
Netting - Safer Access Solutions

The Role of Netting in Prison Security

Netting has become a key component in modern prison security. For HMP Birmingham, the installation of specialist netting offered a practical and immediate solution to the problem of contraband deliveries.

Netting provides a physical barrier that prevents drones from entering the prison grounds. It also deters other forms of contraband delivery, such as thrown packages. Beyond its practical function, netting acts as a visible security measure, sending a clear signal that the prison is actively addressing security threats.

In addition to these benefits, netting supports rehabilitation initiatives. By reducing the availability of drugs and other contraband, staff can focus on positive programs aimed at helping inmates reform. It creates a safer environment that prioritises the well-being of all individuals within the facility.

The Installation Process

We spent a week at HMP Birmingham installing the netting across several key areas of the prison perimeter. The project required careful planning and coordination to ensure minimal disruption to daily operations. Our team worked closely with prison staff to understand the layout and identify the most effective locations for netting.

Safety and efficiency were our top priorities throughout the installation process. All materials were chosen for durability and long-term performance. The netting was securely anchored and carefully tensioned to maintain a strong barrier while allowing for environmental factors such as wind and rain. This type of netting isn’t just used in high-security settings - it’s also effective for protecting buildings, sports facilities and outdoor areas, as well as preventing birds from nesting

The result is a robust system that significantly reduces the risk of drones and other contraband entering the facility. Staff and management at HMP Birmingham can now operate with greater confidence, knowing that a key vulnerability has been addressed.

Supporting Safety and Rehabilitation

Reducing access to illicit substances is crucial for maintaining safety within a prison environment. Drugs can create conflicts among inmates, put staff at risk, and hinder rehabilitation programs. Our netting solution contributes directly to addressing these issues.

By preventing drones and thrown items from entering prison grounds, our netting helps to:

Deter illegal activity
The presence of visible, high-quality security measures demonstrates that the facility is taking proactive steps to address contraband.

Support rehabilitation
Limiting access to drugs allows staff to concentrate on programs designed to help inmates develop skills and prepare for life outside the prison.

Enhance overall security
A strong physical barrier strengthens the perimeter and reduces the likelihood of incidents, helping staff maintain a controlled and safe environment.
